Who could replace Putin if he is toppled in a coup? The rogues’s gallery of henchmen including spy chief who ‘approved’ Litvinenko poisoning who could assume control of Russia if president is overthrown

President Vladimir Putin’s mental soundness has been questioned in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Analysts believe the Russian tyrant is acting abnormally as a result of the brazen act of war and frenzied rants broadcast on state television.

His order to put Russia’s nuclear deterrent on high alert, as well as his implied threat of nuclear war if the West intervenes in Ukraine’s invasion, appeared to surprise even his own military officials.

With the stakes rising and the West putting pressure on Russia’s economy, it’s becoming more possible that Putin will be deposed in a coup.

After Vladimir Putin, Shoygu is Russia’s’second-most popular’ politician.

The defense minister of Chadan, in eastern Russia, had a key role in planning the invasion of Ukraine but was captured on camera grimacing after Putin ordered him and army leader Valery Gerasimov to put Russia’s nuclear deterrent on high alert.

Despite having no military experience, Shoygu was appointed in 2012 and presided over the annexation of Crimea in 2014.#

According to reports, Shoygu is Russia’s best military leader since Georgy Zhukov, the World War II general who destroyed Nazi Germany.

His rise to prominence would be hampered by his inextricable role in the invasion of Ukraine, though he is thought to be more pragmatic than Putin, which might mean a retreat from the country, potentially thawing relations with the West.

‘As a result, Shoygu is intimately implicated in the planning of this campaign, which could work against him.’
